Panel discussion at the Wikimania 2024 conference (video)

During the international conference Wikimania 2024, a panel discussion entitled “Keynote: Opening the Academia” took place. The panel concerned the topic of open science and its various aspects. In particular, the challenges faced by academic institutions that try to implement the principles of open science and the obstacles that hinder these processes were discussed. The role of Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, in the landscape of open science and their potential contribution to solving these problems was also raised.

The discussion was attended by: Prof. Dariusz Jemielniak, Dr. Julia Maria Koszewska, Dr. Włodzimierz Lewoniewski. The session was prepared and led by Katarzyna Makowska (Wikimedia Polska). The panel participants focused on various elements of open science, such as open data, scientific communication and open access. The discussion included a variety of stakeholders, from research institutions to publishers and policymakers.

Wikimania is an annual conference dedicated to all the open-access knowledge projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation – Commons, MediaWiki, Meta-Wiki, Wikibooks, Wikidata, Wikinews, Wikipedia, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikispecies, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wiktionary – with conferences, discussions, meetings, trainings and workshops. Hundreds of volunteers and Free Knowledge leaders from all over the world meet to discuss various topics, propose new projects and approaches, and exchange ideas. This year’s edition of the conference took place in Katowice on August 7-10, 2024. Over 2,000 people from 143 countries participated in this event. Conference website: wikimania.wikimedia.org.
