IT Tools Supporting the Fact-Checking Process

A scientific article addressing the processes of fact-checking and the IT tools supporting information verification has been published in open access. The study deepens understanding of countering online disinformation by introducing a structured fact-checking model alongside practical technological solutions.

The research, grounded in a literature review and enriched by insights from professional fact-checkers, presents a comprehensive process for verifying online information. Key tasks associated with information verification on the internet have been identified, and technological solutions to streamline these tasks have been proposed. Central to the article is the SocialScan application — a tool developed within the OpenFact project designed to assist fact-checkers in identifying content requiring verification. The application was tested by experts under real-world conditions, demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting critical aspects of the verification process. Feedback from expert groups confirmed the application’s potential, while also highlighting possible future enhancements such as advanced fake-news clustering functionalities, thematic signal analysis, and user reputation assessment.
